Element Odysseys Tie-In

Although the past events take place in 1929, Hobson Hill does occupy the same universal space as The Element Odysseys series. The connection created between the two is a brilliant easter egg, so be sure to look for it and be prepared to write a lot of Fan Fiction and what it would be like if the characters in both stories met!

The Story Behind the Story

My Muses

Besides Stingy Jack, there are two other muses in my life. The first is history, who lends her timelessness to the foundation of every story I create. Placing my characters against this backdrop of infinite possibilities, is a true reflection of a time when the supernatural was closest to the conscious mind, before WWII changed all that and so too did the ideology of magic in America.

The second muse is the Midwest starling, Chicago. (Fun Fact: The Latin phrase "Urbs in Horto" appears on the Great Seal of Chicago, which translated in English means Garden City). This rich metropolis owns my heart and I am constantly in awe by her soul, her people, and her legacy, she is my City in the Garden.

A Sophmore's Short Story

Back in 2001, I wrote a short story about a group or pre-high schoolers who went to summer camp on the grounds of the abandoned town relic Hobson Manor. A few weeks into the summer, a severe storm forced the evacuation of the entire camp. A small band of campers, led by heroine AJ were separated from the pack, due to a flash flood and were forced to seek shelter inside the manor. There they encountered, Sebastian, an orange cat, who sends the young teens back in time to solve the town’s greatest mystery, who really murdered the Hobson Family?

From Manor to Hill

Originally, titled Hobson Manor, Hobson Hill is nothing like its younger counterpart. All of the original fantastical storyline has been scraped for a more mature version of magical realism. Some of the names have been kept as homage to the source material, and the only plot device that remains is the murders of the Hobson Family. Mystery still surrounds the grim event, but instead of being the center of the story, it takes a backseat, acting solely as part of Hobson Hill’s allure and town history.
